Hi,

I'm new to ubuntu. I tried install Ubuntu on a Dell workstation which already has a windows 7 installed. All the installation works fine, and after finishing, it reboots, the menu of selecting ubuntu or windows appeared. I can boot into windows with no problem, but selecting the ubuntu just gave me black screen few seconds later.

One possible cause (I think, after reading some of the previous posts in this forum) is that when I use the CD to install Ubuntu, I asked ubuntu to resize my partitions instead of installing it on a new one, and when booting in windows, the system did ask for checking the consistency of disk.

Is there any way to fix it? I would prefer something without going through the installation process again. but if this is the only way, could I get detailed instructions on what to do to avoid this problem? thanks a lot!

Well, there are a few things here that need to be addressed:

1. what graphics card do you have installed?

2. can you boot the LiveCD? If yes, then click on the link at the bottom of my post and follow the instructions there; post the results back here.

3. did you try running a chkdsk from within Windows? I suggest you do so.

Hi, I runed the ckdsk but booting the ubuntu still gives me black screens. the result of the scripts are:

I see you have wubi and a full install but otherwise results.txt look ok.

As Rubi1200 asked what video card? I have nvidia and both install and first boot turned off monitor.

I had to do this:
boot from the cd, press F6 and then select the nomodeset option.
I edited my grub.cfg as I use grub to boot ISO on USB, or in USB's syslinux.cfg or text.cfg
then
On first boot after install, press e on getting the GRUB bootloader.
Using arrow keys navigate to and delete quiet and splash and type the word nomodeset in their place
Press Ctrl and X to boot (low graphics mode)

After I installed nvidia driver (default from pop up) then it has worked without issue.

Or it should be in System>administration>Hardware drivers.

It appears that you can run the the Live CD, if so please post the output of:


lspci | grep VGA

That will tell us exactly what GPU you have. This certainly sounds more like a graphics problem than a grub problem.

Doesn't GRUB2 need to be installed in the MBR of sdb?

Or is this indicating that it is looking at the regular install on sdb?

yes, I checked, my video card is nvidia. so I followed the steps as oldfred posted: change the "quiet splash" to the word nomodeset, then I can boot into ubuntu and download the drive.

Glad you got it working.

Grub likes to default to sda. The boot script or grub2 often mis-identify which drive it looks at (It does that on my computer also). So even though the script says same drive it may be another.

I prefer to have an operating system on each drive and that system's boot loader on the same drive. Then if you ever have one drive fail you can still boot the other. But it is not essential, there are always liveCDs or USB boots as backups, if you have them. You can reinstall grub to sdb and set BIOS to boot sdb and install a windows boot loader to sda, if you want.

I have 3 drives with 3 versions of Ubuntu & XP. Each drive can boot a separate system. Then I have several liveCDs and recently set up two USB's. One boots all my repair ISOs and another is a full install of Ubuntu. I just want to have many ways to boot my system - just in case. (May be a little overkill:)).
