Install BleachBit through Ubuntu Software Center
Goto System Tools>BleachBit (as root)
Check the box next to Free disk space under System
Goto Edit>Preferences and click Overwrite files to hide contents
Click Delete and Delete again and your done!

Depending on the size of your hard drive and your systems specifications it may take a long time so please be patient.

You can also shred files with BleachBit by going to File>Shred Files and selecting files you would like to shred.

Good luck!
