View Full Version : [SOLVED] How to move GRUB?

OmahaVike

i had an existing install of 10.04 and added a new hard drive. installed 8.04 (having stability issues with 64 bit 10.04) on the new drive. now i want to pull that new hard drive and revert back to 10.04.

Question: i seem to recall from my dapper days that simply pulling the newly installed drive causes all kinds of nightmares. i believe that installing a new buntu on a new drive moves the boot pointer to the new drive. how do i point it back to my original drive?

thanks so much for all help!

Pull the new hard disk and then boot from the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD. Boot to the desktop then follow these instructions (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD) to reinstall GRUB 2 for 10.04. If you have a problem(s) then do this:

Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads come back here and do the following:

1. Download the boot info script. There is a link in my signature.
2. Once downloaded move the boot info script to the desktop.
3. Open a terminal and run the command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

See here (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/) for more info on the boot info script.

thank you SO much presence. that script is awesome. will you be kind to lend a hand to look at the output for me?

note that the grub menu.lst from sdd1 appears to be the correct one i wish to use. the one off sdf1 is my old old old old 8.04 one that i don't really care about anymore -- just keep the drive around in case i forgot some old data.

=================== sdf2: Location of files loaded by Grub: ===================

??GB: menu.lst

entirely appreciate yours, or any one else's, help in repointing to the correct drive.

When you installed sdd must have been sda as its menu.lst shows hd0,0 as the install drive, partition. But now as sdd it will be hd3,0 in grub legacy partition counting.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DualBoot/Grub#Ubuntu%209.10%20&%20earlier

#reset grub boot
sudo grub
find /boot/grub/stage1 #you will get a response such as (hd3,0)
root (hdx,y) #use the numbers from the previous command x is drive, y is partition or root (hd3,0)
setup (hd3)
quit

You can do this from liveCD or if you can boot into your install you can run it from that. Then run from your boot run:
sudo update-grub

If that does not work we will have to do the full chroot into your partition from the liveCD.

If you move drives around you may have to reinstall grub again if the drive numbers are different.

if you put sdd (120 GB) as first in the hard disk boot order in BIOS you should boot right up. In Legacy GRUB the hard disk # [x in (hdx,y)] is not determined by the order of your disks in sudo fdisk -l or how linux reads your disk order, but rather by the order of your disks in BIOS in the hard disk boot order. This peculiar trait of Legacy GRUB has confused more than a few people. GRUB 2 has eliminated this quirk.

So if you put sdd as first hard disk to boot your menu.lst from sdd1 will be correct when it reads (hd0,0) for ubuntu.

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

=> No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda
=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb and looks on boot drive #5
in partition #1 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.
=> No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdc
=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdd and looks on boot drive #5
in partition #1 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sde
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdf and looks for
(UUID=dfd7c2e0-1658-4abe-a256-aaf981ff3a78)/boot/grub.

To change the order boot your machine and enter Setup (BIOS). Look for the hard disk boot order menu. Set sdd as first in that order. Save changes to CMOS and continue booting. At GRUB choose ubuntu and you should be good to go.

big thanks to the both of you. solved.

just some follow-up comments for "the next person" who has this problem.

i tried to change the drive order in BIOS with no resolution. unfortunately, i didn't write down my original order, so things really got messed up. anticipating a cleanup job with six or so drives in my fstab.

anyhow, i revisited presence1960's link "follow these instructions to reinstall GRUB 2". unfortunately, when you follow those directions and reboot, I ended up with a grub prompt. eeek!

after poking around a little, and following the command sequence oldfred gave, i put it back together. cheer!

one note to help people with their frustration. THERE IS A SPACE BETWEEN root and (hdx,y). likewise, there is a space between setup and (hd3). so if you're writing it down on paper, don't forget that. of course, if you're fortunate enough to have a mouse and copy/paste ability, you should have nothing to worry about.

thanks again to oldfred and presence1960. much obliged.
