For the past 6 months, I have been using a Linux-based accounting system which just won't do the job for my small business. It is very difficult to use and reports are simply awful.

My needs aren't that great. I need GL, AR, AP, Inventory. I can do payroll by hand. It's a medical practice, so the system has to handle both services and product sales. Insurance billing is handled with separate software, so that's not an issue. I don't have the time or the need or the money to implement an ERP system.

Gnucash can't handle inventory, so I can't use it.

I'm looking seriously at both SQL-Ledger and LedgerSMB, but quite honestly, both seem just a tad dodgy. I can't afford another accounting screw-up.

Has anyone used either of these apps and can give me a straightforward, warts-and-all opinion?

I've been watching some software for a while. I don't use them regularly, but keep an eye out in case I need them.

Here are some suggestions that may or may not work for you. I would have suggested LedgerSMB, SQL-Ledger had you not mentioned them. I assume you tried sql-ledger demo (http://abacus.sql-ledger.com/sl/login.pl)

http://openerp.com/ maybe a bit too big, try out demos (http://openerp.com/discover/demonstration.html) to get a quick look at what it can do.

I don't know your needs so I can only suggest you look at the system I am using

I found it easy to use after a bit of trial and error.http://www.saasu.com.au
