I am about to do a clean install of 10.04 (64-bit) on a ThinkPad X201. The machine will only be running Ubuntu (i.e., no dual-boot). Is there any reason to use compatibility mode for the SATA boot drive, or will AHCI work fine?

Thanks,

im using ahci for my sata, and need to use it, some other users only set "compatibility" so it might depend on the chipset on board, mine is ich7r.

Anyway you can easily set this bios config at any time , that dont care for installation, so dont worry, you will see what is the best for your hdd after installation.
