Options for old Laptop?

I'm looking to install Ubuntu but my laptop is an old T30. Are there things I can do when installing that will make Ubuntu run well on older hardware?

The best way to know for sure is to run the Live CD for evaluation purposes.

If Ubuntu does not work, let us know detailed specs, and I will do my best to suggest an alternate distro. :)
