Mr Schmidt said: "I don't believe society understands what happens when everything is available, knowable and recorded by everyone all the time... I mean we really have to think about these things as a society."

this makes no sense to me...why would google say this...wouldn't this only drive people to be more private in their online activities and therefore hurt google?

You have a point. However he is speaking the truth, most people are not careful about what they do online and they should be more careful.

Indeed. My mantra is... don't do/say anything online you wouldn't do/say in a courtroom or in front of your family.

hm, maybe 'don't be evil' is google's actual motto... companies could learn from them.

I hate it when people have no clue about Facebook and say it's perfectly safe and fine without even reading the EULA. I used to get so damn mad when teenage girls would take pics of me and say "it's only us and our facebook friends!". The hell it is.

My mother used to be the same way. She put up a lot of old pictures of me and ones that I told her to delete.

It's always the computer illiterates. I created a facebook account for the reason of being emailed when somebody tags me in a photo so that I can tell them to get rid of it.

I'm surprised by the number of people who preach good things about google. All I see when I hear the name google is a huge company wanting to maximize profit (obviously).

So to me, google's CEO must have said this in some weird way to actually maximize profit, if that makes any sense.

You do know that you can untag yourself in photos, right? Plus, if you set it up properly, nobody can tag you in the first place.

Personally I try to separate individual comments such as this with the motivations of the corporation. He is allowed to have an opinion that differs from his company, as long as he does his job.

It is funny, this ties in very well with the Facebook Places discussion. I wonder if the release of Places motivated him to post this to begin with.

They want to maximize profits sure, but it seems to me that the entire company is working very hard to do it in a way that doesn't infringe upon your right to privacy.
