View Full Version : [SOLVED] Dual boot w/ Win 7 - fails to load Windows

I recently upgraded Windows Vista to Windows 7 on my desktop that was setup to dual boot with Ubuntu 10.x loaded. Needless to say grub went missing after the install (it was fresh install of Windows, not in-place upgrade).

I followed the instructions on line on reinstalling grub. Now, grub is back with Windows 7 as an entry. And, I can boot into Ubuntu from grub but not into Windows 7. I get the grub command line when I choose that option and when I type exit I get "SYSTEM BOOT ERROR, INSERT DISK..." message.

fdisk -l returns
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 13 5222 41840640 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 5222 20797 125106390 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda4 20798 28719 63633465 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 20798 28390 60990741 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 28391 28719 2642661 82 Linux swap/ Solaris

I believe I installed grub into /dev/sda1.

The grub.cfg entry for Windows 7 looks like this
menuentry "Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)" {
insmod ntfs
set root='(hd0,1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set aa981a71981a3bef
chainloader +1
}

I have tried doing a repair using Windows 7 disk but Windows says there is no issue. Please help

TIA

You have installed grub to the windows boot sector. The windows boot sector has essential data for booting windows.

Boot sector info: Grub 2 is installed in the boot sector of sda1 and

Fix for most, a few have other issues, better than windows fix in many cases as it also fixes other parameters:
This has instructions on using testdisk to repair the install of grub to the boot sector for windows from Ubuntu or Linux LiveCD.

Thanks. I will try it later today and update the thread. BTW, my machine has AMD/64 bit processor and is running Windows 7 64bit.
On the third screen of testdisk should I still choose Intel?

TIA

oldfred

I believe that is what the instructions say. Intel & AMD are the same as they are compatible.

We have had hundreds of users use these instructions and for most they have worked very well. A few had further corruption and required additional fixes and one or two either needed more or just gave up and reinstalled.
