View Full Version : [ubuntu] Lost dual boot on 10.04

One of the updates for 10.04 has done in my ability to dual boot.
The XP option in grub has disappeared.
Grub seems to be saving a large number of older kernels.
This happened to me with 9.10, but the problem disappeared after upgrading to 10.04.
As I expect to stay with 10.04 for awhile, how do I go about recovering?

If you have an Ubuntu CD, please boot the computer with it, choosing the option to try rather than install.

Then, click on the link at the bottom of my post and follow the instructions there.

Post the results back here so we can take a look at your setup and offer solutions.

Thanks.

Since using the "Try it" mode from CD, The system will no longer boot into 10.04.
It get as far as "UBUNTU" with 5 red dot below it and then freezes.
Twenty minute wait produces nothing.
Only responds to Ctrl-Alt-Del.

What's my next move?
Thanks.

I have seen where the "box" that grub presents does not show all the entries but your have to scroll down to see them as they really are still there.

With old grub you can limit the number of kernels shown, change the all to 2. The entry with only one # will be used on the next update of grub.

sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup
gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

## controls how many kernels should be put into the menu.lst
## only counts the first occurence of a kernel, not the
## alternative kernel options
## e.g. howmany=all
## howmany=7
# howmany=all

Then run
sudo update-grub

You can also set many of the parameters with
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/StartUpManager

Have you tried booting with recovery mode?
or
At grub menu use e for edit and remove splash quiet and you will see all the detail of the boot process. Do the last entries give an clues to something wrong.

Oops, never mind. I wasn't paying attention.

The long list of kernels may have simply "pushed" XP out of the visible range of the boot menu ;)

Try using the "down" arrow button and see if it's still not there. If so we need to know what version of grub you have to tell you how to clean up some of the old kernels, to see grub version run:

grub-install -v
