my dad owns a dell laptop that had ubuntu on it. He went to update it to 9.10 karmic and the mouse pad didn't work. I got that working, but it was still very slow. So I did the next upgrade it showed to 10.4. The problem now is that along with the mouse not working again when the username and password screen comes up it will not let me enter the password. I thought maybe the keyboard doesn't work, but in its initial start up screen i was able to use the directional and enter keys to do a memory test. I do not want to do just a fresh install as there are documents on there he does not want to lose. Its a Dell Inspiron with 2 2-gig processors and good memory.
