I have an archive (.tar.gz) for a program; the archive contains the executable and several data files in subdirectories.
In Windows XP, if I wanted to "install" this program in a manner that's reasonably consistent with other programs (excepting registry editing and the like), I'd unpack the archive into a new directory, then copy that directory into \Program Files and make a shortcut to the .exe, which I'd place in All Users\Start Menu\Programs.
To be consistent with other installed programs in Ubuntu, where should I put this program and its data files? How can I make a link/shortcut in the main Applications (Alt+F1) menu that will be available to (and executable by) all users?
