I have an archive (.tar.gz) for a program; the archive contains the executable and several data files in subdirectories.

In Windows XP, if I wanted to "install" this program in a manner that's reasonably consistent with other programs (excepting registry editing and the like), I'd unpack the archive into a new directory, then copy that directory into \Program Files and make a shortcut to the .exe, which I'd place in All Users\Start Menu\Programs.

To be consistent with other installed programs in Ubuntu, where should I put this program and its data files? How can I make a link/shortcut in the main Applications (Alt+F1) menu that will be available to (and executable by) all users?

What exactly is in the archive file? Some files with .deb in the extension?

An executable, along with various data files for sound and graphics, and a couple of subdirectories with level layout files (it's a game).
