What's the current situation on this kind of stuff? Last I heard many years ago, DansGuardian was the gold standard. Has anything new cropped up? Any other tips?

There's not been a lot of progress, it's pretty much still Dansguardian. Ubuntu Christian Edition did some work on better integration into Ubuntu for it, with a GUI, etc.

OpenDNS is another popular option for parental control though. Just point your router at their DNS servers and you're done.

This kind of thing is an enormous maintenance head-ache. You really need resources that only a medium sized country can afford to waste. So you can try to route your internet via a Muslim country like the UAE and let Etisalat filter things for you.

Otherwise, try OpenDNS or DynDNS, as suggested above.
