Good titles for self teaching beggining computer languages?

Can you recomend any first books for learning programming and computer languages? Books that are suitable for complete noobs who have never used a computer language before?

Although there are certainly better books out there, the titles in O'Reilly series tend to be decent and geared toward beginners. They exist for most popular languages.

Googling for tutorials also does wonders.
