Need opinion on theme

Tell me, does the purple theme (first one) or the black theme (second one) look better?

The first one doesn't look too distracting to work, however. It also looks fresher, and the darker background brings the words out.

However, for longer articles, a layout like the one on the right would be better. Someone could only look at the first for so long.
