What's the best free email provider? Yahoo has a crappy spam filter, Google and Microsoft spy on their users. Is there any free email with a good spam filter, and privacy?! :o

I use Yahoo and Gmail. I don't have any problems with the yahoo spam filter *Knocks On Wood*, but I could just be lucky.

I run my own email server, mainly because of the extra control it gives, particularly in the area of spam filtering. It can be easier if you have a spare machine that you can leave on for a sizable portion of the day. I don't like Yahoo's spam filter either. I also have issues with their handling of spam reports, but that's another story.

How do you do that?

Here goes with the short answer: I have a dedicated machine to interact with the outside world. It runs Ubuntu server edition. As well as the stuff for hosting a web site, I've installed an MTA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_transfer_agent) (Postfix (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostfixBasicSetupHowto)) to deal with sending and receiving emails.

It's actually a bit more involved than just installing an MTA, but the links should give you an idea. There's also stuff like figuring out how mail is to arrive from the outside, how you're going to read the email, how you're going to handle spam and malware, how you're going to protect your system from abuse, and whether or not you're going to have your own domain name. Having said that, it's possible to get a working system up and running within an hour or two.
