The title says it all. I am looking for a program which provides desktop applets which work without compositing. Since there are docks which work without, I wonder whether there are applets around which do so as well.

Thanks in advance.

"desktop applets" can you be more specific, there are many programs, that do many different things.
for example:
just a clock
just a monitor
just a calendar
etc...

quick search in synaptic tells me "adesklets" or "gdesklets" might be what your looking for.

I dont think there are any, but it doesn't matter composting is easy:

sudo apt-get install xcompmgr

then just run it by:

xcompmgr -n

now you have composting

By desktop applets you mean something like screenlets, gdesklets etc ?

@lomasa: That's exactly what I'm talking about.

I use many programs which are sensitive to compositing (like Google Sketchup), so that's why I am searching.

@kerry_s: I will check out gdesklets. It sounds like what I need.

And back again.

I have installed gDesklets, started it, no reply.

I restarted the computer, just in case, but no dice.

As for aDesklets, I can't seem to start it either.

If I can get gDesklets to start, I might use it. Any suggestions? All I get now is a button on the panel saying "gDesklet is starting" or something similar, but after that nothing.
