View Full Version : How long do you seed after your torrent is finished?

For me it depends on what I'm torrenting. The majority of the time, I leave it on for about 6 hours after I'm done. For some programs/OSes/Free Shows that I like, such as Pioneer One, The Yes Men fix the world, slackware etc. I'll leave it open for quite a while; until I really need the bandwidth for something else. According to KTorrent, I've been seeding Slack 13.1 for 2 days, 5 hours, TYMFTW for about a week, and Pioneer one for 3 days 2 hours.

I have mine set up until it's reached share ratio is 2.

It depends on what it is. I seed the current Ubuntu until the next version is released. Others I just seed until I hit 1:1

However long it takes for me to reach ratio 1.5

But really, some torrents are so saturated with seeders that it's pointless for me to even seed because i'll only connect to a maximum of one peer at a time, and that peer is already maxing out his connection, so my max seeding upload would be something like 1.5Kb/s

My server provider just changed from 100/100 unlimited to 100/100 to 3TB than 10/10..
woo is me, how can I get by on 10Mb/s :p

i've got a 90KBps down speed and 16KBps up speed, but with 3 servers and bandwith throttling I seed forever

Typically I'll start something when I go to bed, and won't check it again until after I get home from work the next day (14-18 hours later usually). If it's finished then I'll usually kill it. Otherwise I'll let it keep going until the next day or whatever. There's no real set time/ratio I keep. It just depends on when it finishes and when I check it.

I don't seed at all once my torrent is finished. I probably should, but even when I'm downloading, I set my download speed to the max, and upload to the min. I know, you can hate on me. :P

Never had a torrent finish ..............

If the download speed of the torrent was really fast and there were many seeders, I won't seed. If the torrent took forever, then I will be seeding for quite some time.

As everyone else, it depends. Since I have two machines with 100 Mbit pipes, though, I generally leave it for quite a while, and I have all the Ubuntu ISOs seeding constantly.

You are missing the standard option of 100%

Since I do my torrents on another computer, I will let them seed until the program says enough. That is PROVIDED the download turns out crap free. IF it has malware/virus content, I stop the seed and delete.

I tend to seed for about a day or so.

Huh? The poll needs options for ratio. Time doesn't matter to me.

I only torrent Linux distros. I usually seed most of the .isos of Fedora releases for a week or two after they come out. After that there are so many seeders that I'm not really helping.

I try to seed to at least a 1 ratio, but if there are crazy amounts of seeders, I usually just skip it. If there are less than 10 seeds though, I let it run until I need the drive space/bandwidth.

sorry about not having ratios on there; I seed by time and didn't really think about it. Glad to see so many seeders though..

10-20 Minutes max, sometimes none (if there's lots of seeders and nobody downloading off me). I have a 100 GB Bandwidth limit, and I usually use 50-70 of it, I can't afford to seed torrents all the time. EDIT: Sometimes I'll go to 1:1 ratio, but not usually more than that.

I have a list of torrents I seed all the time. I started seeding back in late 2006 when I first started using Linux again. I cap my max upload at 3Kbps as my "super turbo charged cable" doesn't allow any more than 9Kbps.

Worst ISP I've ever had since switching from dialup. Damn you Time Warner.

I stop seeding whenever I restart my PC; might be a week or so.

Sorry, for being a leecher, but generally I don't seed. FOR A GOOD REASON THOUGH!!! I live with my bro-in-law and sister, and avoid taking up all the bandwidth whenever they're online. But, that's also the only times I ever download torrents, for the same reason. So, I seed as much as I can get away with, which is usually around 20-30 minutes max.

Depends on what it is and or the tracker. On the tracker I usual use, I try and seed it to at least 1.0, but usually more than that.

I always share 1:1 (or if unable to reach 1:1, 4 weeks).

Its nice to torrent on linux, because while everyone else is getting viruses and trojans, we are surfing the net with 'minimal' worry, even when we open untrusted files.

That should be a big selling point on the file sharing forums.

I don't pay attention to how long a torrent seeds. I have rtorrent set to close torrents when they reach 101% and I only stop early when no one's downloading from me.

I always seed for infinite time (or until my downloaded files are deleted for some reason). However, I always rotate torrents so simultaneously there are not more than 5-7. Avg ratio is ~4.

You can cap your downloads and uploads... lower it to maybe 40-50% of your total bandwidth.. With most modern connections (1 to 3 mbps -- aka DSL/cable) there shouldn't be any noticeable difference whilst browsing the web. That way you can have your downloads and uploads working throughout the day so your torrents'll be active longer and possibly download "faster" .. also, in deluge, you can set your torrents based on time. example: Full throttle from 1AM to 8AM and then cap to maybe 80Kb/s for the rest of the day.

I have a 5GB cap on my internet and after that my bandwidth is only 90Kbps download and 15Kbps upload. So i couldn't seed for long but I lose count of the time.
