View Full Version : [SOLVED] XP in XP/Vista dual boot fail after installing Ubuntu

Hello,

I have two HDDs, one 500GB and one 1TB. The 500GB is used for operating systems, where XP and Vista have been dual booting. Now, I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a seperate partition on the same disk. When I restarted after the installation was complete, the grub loader never appeared and I went straight to the Windows loader. I guess this happened because some grub startup files were written to the 1TB drive, since this is the sda while the 500GB is sdb. When I chanced the boot priority in the bios to prefer the 1TB sda disk, grub and Ubuntu loaded perfectly. Windows loader worked as it used to and Vista loaded without any problems. But when I now choose XP from the Windows loader, my computer restarts immediately! Changing boot priority back to the 500GB disk, both XP and Vista works perfectly, but there is no grub loader.

Is there any way I can fix this without reinstalling XP and Vista onto the 1TB disk, and without having to change the boot priority every time I want to change between Ubuntu and XP?

Welcome to the forums.

So we can see what is installed where:

Paste results.txt, then highlight entire file and click on # in edit panel(code tags) to make it easier to read.
Or You can generate the tags first by pressing the # icon in the post's menu and then paste the contents between the generated [ code][ /code] tags.

Windows combines boot loaders into one active (boot flag) partitions. So when booting Vista do you not get a choice of Vista or XP. Grub will not let you directly boot both windows. You may be able to repair the XP partition to get it to separately boot if that is the problem.

To get each MS to have its own boot loader make a second primary partition and set its boot flag on, then install the 2nd product in it. Multibooters, Pictures here worth 1000+ words

Boot from the ubuntu Live CD and go to the desktop. Open a terminal and run
sudo mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt This will mount your ubuntu / partition.

Next in terminal run
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sdbThis will put GRUB 2 on the MBR of the 500GB disk.

Reboot without the Live CD. Go into BIOS and put sdb (500 GB) as first in the hard disk boot order. Save changes to CMOS and continue booting. You should now have GRUB. Boot into Ubuntu and open a terminal and run
sudo update-grub

P.S. You installed Vista without marking it's partition as bootable prior to the installation so your Vista boot files are combined with XP. You may have to choose XP from the GRUB menu and will be given the choice of choosing either XP or Vista. Let us know how it turns out.
