Thread Introduction & Purpose
*********************************

While answering a support question I very often have to recall previously visited threads & external websites whom I once found useful.

Making a fresh search everytime being inconvenient, I felt the need for a database of such links. I thought how nice it would be to have such a database on a click of a link on my signature. And that's how this idea struck me- "If I have to create such a database online, why not within the forums?" Maybe if it became really useful, then I may well get other members' support too! So here it is...

I intend to make this thread a reference database for promising, possibly 'best', 'open-for-all' solutions on general problems & tasks that are generic, *buntu-related or of some other forum-supported type in nature. (well.... I may also include links on some specific problems later- depending upon thier usability & availability)

This is also an open invitation/request to everyone who thinks he/she knows about a really nice, probably best freely available guide, tutorial or an ultimate solution to a problem. However, if you feel like you can help me, please post only reference links with a short description of their targets. If you want to post an entire solution, please post it in some other relevant thread or create a new one, and post only its link here. With my extremely limited knowledge & time, I'll try to review each & every posted link & add it to the index list depending upon its appeal & usability.

I understand that there may be already existing sophisticated & 'perfect' solution centers in & out of this forum. I just dream of making this one an 'easy-to-browse', one-stop-reference-center for all those scattered links.

Current Sources for New Links:
1) The 'Most Obvious Method' (aka "Google-Search")

2) Suggestion Posts

3) Apparently Complete &/or Promising Solutions Found in the Forums

4) Tips'n Tutorials Section (only selected links)
Criteria For Selection:
1) Solution should be complete & useful.

2) It should be free for all.

3) The related subject must be generic or *buntu-related or of a type that is supported by Ubuntu Forums.

4) Subject should obviously be relevant, i.e., shouldn't be related to something that is no more in use.

5) A solution can be selected if it is satisfactory in most cases & no better solution has been suggested.
Criteria For Replacement:
A new found/suggested link can replace an existing one if-
1) It obviously looks better. (effectiveness/ease of use/presentation etc.)

2) It is approved by most users.

3) It is somehow unarguably proved to be better than existing one.

Criteria For Removal:
1) Link is found dead.

2) Subject is not relevant anymore.

3) Negative criticism / reporting by users.

4) Failure in satisfying any of the selection criteria.
Declaration & Request:
1) Although, with the help & co-operation of members & hopefully admins/mods too, I'll try to keep the thread always updated, yet it may not be possible to scrutinize all the links. So their relevance/effectiveness is not guaranteed.

2) With respect to above, I request everyone that if someone finds a link dead or otherwise replaceable/removable, please report me in a new post. It may be a great piece of help to me which I thank in advance for!

3) I may not always be available (sometimes for weeks!) to update the thread, but whenever I will, I'll certainly try to go through all new posts & consider new suggestions.

4) For ease of browsing, I'll try to keep the structure of Index flexible across linked posts such that it can be changed when & if required depending upon accumulation of new links. As such, the location of categories & related links may change from time to time. However, it'll always be easy to browse them via main index post which will be stable (hopefully;)).

5) Considering above point, if you refer someone to this thread, please refer them to the thread itself or to the Main Index Post only, not to some other specific post (unless the intention is something other than what this thread is intended for).

6) Due to lack of proper knowledge, resources & time, I may happen to make frequent mistakes in selection & presentation of links. So I apologize in advance for such possible mistakes & request you to kindly bring it to my notice &, if possible, guide me with your valuable hints, comments & suggestions.

7) [I hope I'll soon be able to remove this point!] Right now, since I have a very small set of links that I found useful & use frequently, I'll list them in a single post without much formatting. Besides, I'm a bit puzzled about how to categories & present various links I may include later. So suggestions for new links &/or a categorization plan are most welcome. In fact, it'll be a great favor to me!!

8 ) In the Last, despite the whole too-ambitious looking details given above, I'd like to remind everybody once more that this thread has been started by a rather inexperienced guy (me) with little knowledge, fulfillment of a very simple need of a very simple database in mind, and who would be working on it only in his spare time. So Please Don't Expect Much Out Of It!!
Sorry for the disheartening closing comment above after such a 'Great Wall of Text', but I really don't expect much out of it unless I'm miraculously surprised by user-response. I put in so many details just because I'm creating it in a public domain which itself has a lot of potential of its own even if I don't have it in myself.

Seeing so many requests, many of you may think & comment like- "You've only created a dull thread & wish everyone else to do the hard work for you.... blah-blah...". Well I'd most humbly admit that to a certain extent, 'yes, that's almost exactly what I wish & expect!' I really don't think I'm eligible enough to do anything more than just collecting-sorting & presenting the links. Besides, at a certain level (if I could reach there), even that may be quite a task. I just felt the need for it, so instead of requesting someone else, I came up myself with a crude plan (capable enough to serve my needs at least), sought permission and jumped in. However, not a promise though, I'll try to make honest efforts to make this thread really useful & to keep it always updated.

Even if nobody finds it useful, it will have at least 'one user' (me;)) who will be using it as his reference point. On the contrary, if it got overflowed with suggestions, please don't expect me to sort them out immediately since I'd be working on it only in my leisure hours!

Having said that, here I begin with my bit for now, hoping that knowledgeable would co-operate & seekers would find it useful....

Thanx!

INDEX

(Temporary Note: Currently I don't have many links in my collection and I've become really busy for last few days. So instead of waiting till I may come up with an impressive list, I think I'm better off presenting whatever I have right now. I'll improve this list as often as I get time & suitable content for it! Right now, I'm presenting these as a simple list. Thanks.)
