There is no best, only different, try them out for yourself.

OS X. I don't know if it fits a 700MB CD, but it comes pre-installed on Macs.

OS X doesn't run on the old PPC.

There is FreeBSD the most populare followed by OpenBSD.

Edit: Correction, OpenBSD only works on "New World" PPCs, iMAC.

In my opinion freebsd is the best one, no idea how the ppc version is, but its only 345MB, so give it a try.

It depends how old. OS X predates the Intel switch. And no, OS X is not a *BSD. Saying it is is akin to saying Ubuntu is GNU/Hurd. They have (some of) their userspace in common, but not their kernel.

OS 10.4 was the last version to fully support the PPC. OS 10.5 only supports some PPC, and OS 10.6 does not support PPC of any age. I never said that OS X was a BSD.

It is surely not a "pure BSD", but wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_BSD_operating_systems) lists Darwin and OS X as BSD operation systems. And I was only joking (this is the cafe, right?).

I suppose I am far too late to chime in, but I am trying (with some success) to convert an entire room of PPC G3, G4 and iMacs to Ubuntu. It's been a crap shoot to see which box will install and which will not. Display issues at the Boot: prompt stop me dead in the water. And trying to get to the xorg.conf is proving ridiculously difficult. I am at this moment burning the Alt installer CD. Hints, tips? What have you discovered?

OS X's kernel is free BSD, renamed as Darwin (and of course modified to work with the rest of the OS).

Is Darwin seriously based on NeXTStep?

I could be wrong (and am too lazy to check), but I believe NetBSD's core goal is to be able to run on virtually any machine.

Not BSD but there's also Yellow Dog Linux.
