I'm planning to start working on a little website for myself. Those of you that have websites, where did you register your domain names and where do you host it? Why there?

I registered my domain at easily.co.uk (they also handle my DNS), it's one of the easiest (Heh.) to use services I've ever used and is quite reliable, except for their email service which is the worst I've ever used. I host it on a massive noisy server at home. :D

I use https://www.domaindiscount24.net/ but mostly because I have a buddy who works there, so I can get really nice discounts. ;) I guess all registrars are more or less the same anyway.

We use Domain Monster (http://www.domainmonster.com) at work and I also use it for personal use, very good and great support. They also offer DNS which is helpful.

I can tell you who not to host with: GoDaddy and Netfirms. You'll be attracted by the prices but will thoroughly regret it when you try to do anything more complicated than... HTML.

As for buying a domain, you'll be fine with whoever you do choose.

I'm with mendhak on that.
Don't host with Godaddy, you have to pay for everything, it's way too expensive, and the service isn't all that great.

But Godaddy is pretty good for domain buying, I use it.

I agree for the most part; as long as they are ICANN-accredited and you haven't heard too many bad things about them, any should be fine. Go price shopping. I currently use Name.com because they have pretty good customer service and I've been grandfathered-in on free whois privacy, but I move around between registrars every few years.

I used to use DreamHost for hosting, and while there are plenty of people that hate them there are plenty more that love them. Pretty decent support there too, and good if you're just getting started with web hosts.

Currently I'm at Linode, a VPS provider, meaning that I get to set up the server myself. If you're looking for something more powerful in the future, I completely recommend Linode, but for beginners to web hosting start with a shared provider.

My suggestion here is to use different companies for domain registration and hosting. In that way one keeps control over the domain name and can shop aggressively for the more expensive part namely hosting.

http://godaddy.com (http://godaddy.com/) is good for my needs.

Domain registration is very reasonable. Hosting is only $4.99 monthly.

You can ftp your html files so you aren't tied to their authoring tools.

Their domain control panel is a little slow at times, but other than that I'm happy with it so far.

Every episode of the Linux Action Show (http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/?cat=4) includes a shameless plug for godaddy, in addition to a 20% discount code.

If you decide to use godaddy, it may be worthwhile to watch an episode.

http://www.dreamhost.com

Many extras included (subversion, mysql databases, shell access etc.), excellent support when I've required it.

Yeah, if you buy a hosting package with it. :)

I'll add my bit...

I use Daily.co.uk to register domain names. They're relatively cheap (compared to other UK based registrars) but what I like about them is that all the management tools are accessible in their control panel. So, if I ever want to change name servers or even transfer the domain I don't need to ask anyone for favours. Some registrars will make transferring a domain quite complicated in the hope that you give up and leave it with them. Avoid those in any case.

I am located in the US, so I am not sure how this will work for you, but I have been with 1and1 hosting service for the past 10 years or so, and I maintain 4 sites. I have 6 domain names registered with them. There prices are real good and I have had good luck with their support.
Also they have very nice tools to add thinks like (see screen shots).
There web address is 1and1.com (http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Home;jsessionid=CE093E596742DFE0FD7D4E2B8E4460BA.T Cpfix142a?__reuse=1289316623349)
Edit: they have Linux and Windows servers, and of course I use the Linux server + I have my own server with one domain which is very easy to point to from there server.

I've used DirectNIC (http://www.directnic.com/) for about a decade now. At $15 they're a bit more expensive than the GoDaddy's of the world, but they have excellent support and, like the registrars mentioned above, you can manage all your servers over the web.

I would never use GoDaddy. I've found them difficult to deal with when trying to move domains away from them, and I've been disgusted by their sexist advertising campaigns.

DirectNIC had its operations in New Orleans at the time of hurricane Katrina and managed though heroic efforts (http://webhosting.devshed.com/c/a/Web-Hosting-News/Heroic-Web-Hosting-DirectNIC-vs-Katrina/) to remain online. That's what I call "customer service!"

I had my domains registered with Godaddy. But then I heard a lot of bad things about them. I personally never had bad experience with them, but I switched nevertheless. My current registrar is nearlyfreespeech.net. Never heard a bad thing about them.

How would you rate DH? And how good are Linode prices?

If you don't mind looking like a fraud, get a free domain over at CO.CC. :)

I thought they were awesome. Most of my support tickets were answered in about 5 minutes, and the techs always knew what they were talking about. Sites were pretty reliable; and the one time *I* overloaded the shared server they helped me implement some caching to make it speeder. Compare that to other hosts that will just tell you to go elsewhere if you do something wrong. :)

As for linode, see for yourself (http://www.linode.com/). $20 for a 512MB VPS (what I'm on) is pretty competitive, and I haven't found many other hosts that offer the same level of features for that price. (If anyone's thinking of signing up with Linode and doesn't mind helping me out, let me know and I'll give you a referral. I get a $20 credit towards the next bill. :))

I use hosting24 because I'm a newb, and it's been easy for me to use.

I at first registered my domain at nic.cz.cc, but I recently decided (two days ago) to buy my own domain. I bought the domain qu404.com for $17.49 ($10 for the .com domain + $6.49 for WHOIS privacy + $1 sales tax) at www.domain.com (http://domain.com) (what a GREAT URL for a site for buying domain names!) and have it hosted at 0000free (http://0000free.com/index.html) on their Epic server. The hosting is free, but the domain is not.

Personally I couldn't be happier with my host. Their service is amazing for a free host and they give so many options for me when building my site. Support is amazing too; I have yet to see a faster response time than their Systems Operator (or SysOp)
