View Full Version : [ubuntu] using something else for desktop management rather than Nautilus

It maybe stupid, but I'll die if I don't ask.
I wanted to assign a different wallpaper to each workspace and found out that in gnome, it's almost impossible, since Nautlius is in charge of generating desktop and by disabling Show Desktop for Nautilus, desktop icons, launchers and everything else is gone, but then the compiz wallpaper -which can be different for every workspace- is viewable. So unless Nautilus or Compiz release a fix for this, the problem remains the same.
But is it possible to use another package, like dolphin or konqueror instead of Nautlius so it's not in charge of desktop? When I try to remove Nautilus, something called gnome-desktop tends to remove too. So should I find an alternative for gnome-desktop? Is there any?
