View Full Version : [ubuntu] Fresh Install Over Dual-Boot Setup

I've got a dual-boot setup with Ubuntu Karmic and Windows 7. Can I just install Lucid over Karmic and retain the dual-boot? The crux of the matter is whether grub2 will detect and list win7 during the fresh install, even though Karmic was there. I don't like or trust upgrades, which is why I ask. Plus I have an encrypted /home I don't care to keep encrypted, and I want to wipe it clean (unless anyone knows how to decrypt it permanently).

Also, is there any good reason to give /boot it's own partition, and can I move to that configuration without destroying my setup? I know how to use gparted already to resize and add partitions, but I've never manipulated grub2 in that manner.

I've tried many flavors of Linux and either deleted the partition they were on first using GParted or most of the time there is an option in the install to erase and install. I haven't had a problem doing it many times.
