context -
female lead has placed a trojan on the male lead's computer by means unspecified in the movie. we see her mucking about with several terminals at a time open on her macbook (OS X). a bunch of them look like she entered 'ls -l' and just left it open in the background.
later, she gets in a physical altercation in the subway and gets some beer spilled on her and her laptop, and the laptop looks to have ended up hitting the wall pretty hard. (her being victimized by men is a common theme throughout the movie -- this movie is potentially above an "R" rating by American rating conventions.)
so, she goes to her friend that knows more about computers than her. he says he can recover the data on the hard drive and let her use his 'backup' desktop. her handle is "WASP".
movie's wikipedia article here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_With_The_Dragon_Tattoo). It's out of Sweden, not Hollywood or India.
It's also a very good movie, presently out on DVD in the states.

Interesting. I've read the first two books in the trilogy. I see that I can stream that movie from Netflix. I look forward to seeing it.
The books are very dark...pretty disturbing actually.

Great movie, but technology wise it's pretty much a really long ad for Apple.

yes, lot's of screen-time for the apple logo.
not necessarily inaccurately, though.
the script kiddy plays with her macbook.
then, because she doesn't know how to use a screwdriver, goes to the gentleman that looks a bit like a classical unix hacker to take out the hard drive and copy the data.

Not that it really matters but there is a Hollywood remake in the works. Given their penchant for all things Microsoft I'm sure they'll mess up this scene or any other (for that matter) that is related to technology.

REALLY, REALLY good books...
I've read all three.
However there is some discrepancy in the english translation.
The hacker program, hacks into 'internet explorer' in the book(s) but she is on an apple, and so are her target(s)! A little far fetched from a linux point of view, but an AWESOME story none the less.
The Swedish movie, even with subtitles is worth watching! But read the book first, it is a page turner!

I don't think that is far fetched.

Actually, Hollywood usually uses MAC because the hardware is good-looking, and sometimes add a fake windows wallpaper (complete with a fake Start button), to make the screen look more Windows-ish. Sorry, cannot find my references now, but they use Macs in pretty much all TV shows, uh, if you watch those

as i understand it, it's usually just animated artwork on the screen. someone behind the scenes with a mouse/keyboard actually plugged into the computer controls the animation.

Actually, Hollywood has not even begun production of this movie yet. In fact Lizbeth's character has NOT even been cast yet. The ONLY film of this movie is the Swedish version (with subtitles).

No, Hollywood uses Macs because Apple pays them large sums of money to do so. Product placement in movies is huge business, and Apple is all over it like a rash.

In recent films, I've actually fell out of my chair laughing at the blatant advertising. It's just ridiculous.

It actually annoys me when you can tell the shot was designed to display the Apple logo on the laptop lid clearly for a certain number of seconds. If the advertising was done seamlessly, then it wouldn't be so bad. After all the world is full of logos.

Not true. In the UK you get a choice on your DVD - original Swedish or an English soundtrack.
I thought it pretty cool what she did to that nasty lawyer/"guardian" guy. How's he gonna explain that to his missus?

If you didn't know better, you might believe that Apples are the most popular computers in the world. Seems like everyone on TV uses one.

It was 'dubbed' but still the same movie.

I read the three books and watched the movies and they're okay.
I wonder if the program the character Lisbeth Salander uses really exist --asphyxia-- and if it's possible to hack ubuntu/linux computers with it. Anyone knows?
I'm kind of paranoid right now.

Also, if you watch her in the first fer scenes, when she is uploading the pictures she took of him, you see the Unity interface. I investigated further to see if Mac OSX aver used this sort of interface and it did not, and no custom ones were created from any of my friend's knowledge (big Linux and Mac nerd). Here's a screenie, also I notice the Terminal icon. It must be a themed Ubuntu 11.04!

Are you sure it's ubuntu, it is definitly a debian based distro and that unity interface just looks like a dock to me.

Unity didn't exist in 2009. I think it's osx with its dock moved to the left.
And I think that the app behind the empty white window is photoshop.

Don't speak too soon! It's directed by David Fincher, lately of Social Network with all of its wget usage and KDE screenshots.
Unrelatedly, Trent Reznor is doing the soundtrack for this one also. Overall, I'm looking forward to it (hopefully I'll get around to reading the books first!).

Well because Mac computers or Dell computers are more into multimedia. So hollywood likes to use these.
Where other PC's are too businesses oriated. The only reason windows got monoply is do to games they beet apple from start.
The 3 biggest mistake of apple .
1.Macs are over price ( alot of people do not like paying alot of money )
2.They Make OS and Mac computers
3.They did not beet Microsoft with games from the start
If apple did what Microsoft did just make the OS and you go to any store buy any PC and choise of windows or OS X you see it very much different than the 90% market share of windows.
Other reason if apple is to make Mac computers
1. over price
2. little to choose from
3. known to be slow to update computer line to new hardware spects.
I mean the Mackbook aire and Macbook still have the core 2 Duo. They have to update it more than in the summer or fell.
For Linux if you can go to store buy any computer and choose Linux OS the market share will go up.
Most people are not computer savvy and want every thing given to them no installation ,configuration ,tweaking at all.
Just plug in and use.

After reading the books and watching the Swedish films, I'm going to skip the Hollywood version. The Swedish films captured the mood and plot of the books perfectly, and I can't imagine that Hollywood will do anything but mangle the heck out of the stories.
Besides, I fell in love with Nooni Rapace, and I refuse to see any movies that don't feature either her or Angelina Jolie.

I watched the first two movies so far. I really got to get around to finish watching them on Netflix.
But yea I remember when the laptop got smashed, wasnt sure if it was OSX with a term open or Linux. But from Earthpig's close up it appears to be Ubuntu.
I hope Hollywood doesnt screw those movies up, they are actually very very good. If I didnt have ADD I would read the books.

Nope, I'm 100% sure that's OS X.
- Theme matches
- Finder icon
- Quicktime icon
- Dock turns black and loses 3d effects when moved to the left on Leopard and Snow Leopard.
- Little UI things that I recognize. Looks like it might be Photoshop.
Edit:
That's the Mac OS X Terminal icon. OS X is a UNIX-based OS.

No idea why dock would be on the left not the buttom.
That is strange .May be they did not want you to think it was a Mac.

What wrong with that
"They Make OS and Mac computers"
Nokia does as well!!!
2) They are overprice but how many OS on market has
5 years of softwere updates?
Is not for sure for windows 95?
Well acually I used Mac OS in 1996 last time on G4 processors,
probably as twice faster then x486.
Overal Mac survive and so many people use them in media industry, becosue it works. Mac Os is very relable. Overprice but hardwere and OS works great together ok/
I knew pepople who newer like windos and use Amiga for converting weddings, but that was in time then Jurasik Park was in Cinema
Linux is very relable, but is for free.

You can easily move the dock to the left, right, or bottom. It can even be moved to the top of the screen, but that's not as easily accomplished.

Okay, so I JUST got back after watching the Hollywood version of this movie, and I can say that the character Lisbeth is using Ubuntu in this version to. And also on a Macbook. Unfortunately I do not have any screencaps, since I watched the movie in at the cinema.
Also, if you liked the books and/or the Swedish movies, i would say: Go see this movie too. It actually was really well-made, and not at all to "Americanized" as i thought that it would be. The movie was also pretty entertaining, since it is recorded in Swedish, and all of the names are the original Swedish names to. I am from Sweden myself, and listening to the actors pronouncing the Swedish names was a bit funny to me.

i noticed it when i saw the film. when she transfers data from her broken laptop's hdd the the files are a debian based os running fluxbox, i think, instead of a mac. it's just a mistake it should have been a mac.

So glad I wasn't the only one watching the film looking at the computers in use! I kept thinking, "but this film just came out... why the hell did the apple store sell her OS X Tiger?!.. Sweden definitely had SL when I was there!"
Agree very good film, found a nice balance of... um "graphic content" that didn't put me off the popcorn too much, but then the books were pretty darn disturbing themselves in places! Really looking forward to the next one! (Just picked up the original boxset in the HMV sale - so looking forward to getting stuck into that... at some point!)
There is a little bit of "let the right one in" about it - It's basically the exact same film, on one hand a good thing - they didn't mess it up ,but at the same time it's such a close remake you wonder what the point was... but still lap it up :D

Yeah in the Hollywood version she is using a Mac and most of the screen-shots in the movie are OS X but there is at least one quick scene where I'm sure there is a Linux rig running. Not sure what flavor but I'm sure it's a Linux distro.
Great movie btw. Have not seen the Swedish version yet but will. And the Swedish "Let the Right One In" is tops!
