View Full Version : [ubuntu] 10.04 and webcam... how to reinstall gstreamer etc...

i have an ubuntu lenovo laptop that MUST be able to run skype video, otherwise i'll have to switch to the dark side. the logitech webcam does not work - i think it worked initially, but an update may have nixed it. it doesn't matter what i do in gstreamer prefs, cheese will not see the webcam and consequently skype can't.

i do not want to reinstall the entire system to arrive at the same result. can anyone provide a guide on how to fix/reinstall the entire subsystem dedicated to webcam/video?

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese

put that in a terminal
see if it helps with cheese

gstreamer look in the add remove see if good,bad,ugly,and 10 is installed

interesting, with that i get a picture in cheese, however tons of errors in the terminal window, and a green bar at the bottom of the cheese image underneath the correct video feed......

the errors all go along the lines of...
libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 2 more bits
and keep coming all the time
