Can't log on

I can't logon, I type in my password, the screen goes black for a little while then it returns to the logon screen.

10.04 gnome. Any ideas?

Also I can't use my keyboard in recovery mode... either of my keyboards. they're both usb. looking for a ps2 one but can't find it.

Ok I reset the X server... I now get the following upon trying to /etc/init.d/gdm start;

Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode
