I have managed to make the Applications/Places/System menu disappear from my top panel. Probably something I did ... clicking on stuff I really don/t understand yet. I;m like that. How do I get it back!?

Well, if your panel is still there... presumably with the date and clock still intact.. all you have to do is click on an empty space on the panel, and "right click". That should bring up an option called "Add to panel".

then just search through and select "Main Menu" "the main GNOME menu".

The applet with separate entries for Applications, Places and System is called "Menu Bar", while the "Main Menu"-applet combines them all into a single icon.
