So I'd like a cheap laptop given a few constraints (in order of importance):

1) Runs Ubuntu with less than major hiccups.
2) Costs less than $400 before tax. (rebates included)
3) 4 GB RAM
4) 64 bit processor, fast as possible
5) 15-ish inch screen.
6) Numeric keypad
7) webcam
8) decent rep for not breaking (or if something usually breaks, cheap and easy fix)

These are FUZZY constraints, meaning I'll consider something that doesn't quite fit if everything else is perfect.

(I actually found one that's pretty close, but I'm not sure if number (1) applies: Toshiba satellite c655d at newegg...)

"Cheap laptop" sounds like a nightmare already.

I know you intend to be helpful, but you're not.

I say cheap because I see people with expensive laptops having problems too, and I figure why pay extra if I'm going to have the same problems.

Anyways, if someone has an intelligent suggestion, as opposed to a snarky comment, please suggest away.

Great find, I was just on Tigerdirect, and couldn't find this. 500GB!?

So Gateway, though... what's their reputation? Decent for Ubuntu?

I've used several Gateways, most recent is just like that one but with a 320GB HD and it works fine except for the Webcam and I haven't tried to fix it because I never use it. I paid $499 for it about 6 mo. ago. I believe I'm going to downgrade to 32-bit Ubuntu because 64-bit doesn't support Flash.
