Listen to all of the "Trialogues", created by 3 of the smartest heretics on the planet (though now unfortunately Terence McKenna, is dead). Listening to these conversations can certainly change the way a person thinks & sees the world for the rest of their lives.

They are at the end of this page:

Find a good webcomic you haven't read and read it start to finish - that'll waste a day.

"Order of the Stick" is fun

If not that, you could always talk to people :)

Or you could post about what you should do on the Ubuntu forums!

Sometimes when I'm bored I just start reading manpages at random.

Lately though, it's been webcomics. I just got caught up with Demon Eater, and it is fascinating.

It's a problem when it happens at uncanny times but one really doesn't feel like sleeping. Like last night. Went to bed early (11PM), went through the channels (50+), went through movies and TV series, IM, FB, UF, Snotr, TED and several news sites. 11:10, fired up dosbox and played XCOM: Enemy Unknown for two hours. See? There's always something to do :)

Damn, wish I had a copy of this to hand to my now ex on our first date all those years ago. Not that it would have helped, but it would have saved me a lot of talking. Oh, the hours wasted arguing whether 170 is overweight for 5'11" and whether or not benching 90 is pathetic...

Online suggestions:
- Kill some time on IRC... there's always good conversation on there.
- Visit archive.org and see what your fave websites looked like in years past
- Google yourself and see what you find
- Visit Groups.Google.com and search for topics in the 80's and 90's. Always great for a read, plus for techies the entire Linus Torvalds vs Andrew Tanenbaum debate is still out there among other awesome snippets of history.

Offline suggestions:
- Visit your local library and read through newspaper articles from like 100 years ago or just browse the books and magazines.
- Do genealogy research on your family (also at the library, not online, unless you're online at the library).
- Do you have a Goodwill Computer Store and search for awesome deals.
- If you have a university in your area, go walking around it as if you go there -- and to get more looks wear a T-Shirt from a rival school.
- Go peruse the used book stores or comic shops

Just some suggestions of things I used to do when I was single... but now with a family and kiddos there's never an idle moment when there's not something around the house that needs to be done.

Everyone is always bored it seems, and wants to know what to do... I have a feeling that Ubuntu should have a "I'm Bored" button. So that when you press it, it will tell you exactly what you should do, and then it shuts the computer down.

There are a million things to do, all of them involve getting away from technology. Firstly, we are going to take advice from What About Bob; take baby steps.
1)Turn off the computer, TV, Cellphone, iPod, etc, etc, etc.
2)Walk out the door of your abode.
3)Continue walking until you reach a lake.
4)Take off your shoes, socks, and jewelry. (Optionally take off more as is appropriate, if it's dark, you should just go Roman style.)
5)Enter lake.
6)Swim around, splash, laugh, dive under water, float on your back, etc.
7)Repeat step 6 until tired.
8 )Go home.

If you are lacking a lake, just go to a park, and walk around... not on the trails, but off of the trails. You need to experience life, and nature, breathe some fresh air, it's a good idea.

TV always disappoints when you need it most.

We have chosen to never have a TV in the 20+ years we have lived in this house. I have lived elsewhere prior to that & didn't want it then either. Life is far more peaceful in a house without an idiot box.

I'm The Slime lyrics
by Frank Zappa

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed 'n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I'm the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I'm the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I'm the slime oozin' out
From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help . . . no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That's right, folks . . .
Don't touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin' room floor

I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go

I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin' room floor

I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go

I have been without entertainment for 20 minutes. What am I to do?...

When there is no entertainment, that is the perfect time to contemplate or think about other things. For example:

1. What do I want to accomplish in my life?
2. Where to I want to be in my carrier in 2, 5, or 10 years?
3. What are the important people or things in my life?
4. How do I balance my career goals with my family life?
...
n. Other questions I may have that entertainment may be distracting me from thinking about.

Yes, I am an old person. As you get older you begin to accept your own mortality, and you may start asking yourself the same questions (and more that do not comply with Forum rules). However, don't dismiss these questions. Think about the questions you are asked when you interview for a job. Some of the questions I have listed may be asked during an interview.

Why not contemplate or think about why an employer may ask those questions.
