beginner question on tor and proxychains

hi, yesterday I successfully setup tor for firefox. Can I use tor for other programs like Empathy IM Client?

another thing I installed and configured yesterday was proxychains but I'm still not sure how to use it correctly. Can someone help me with that?

I'm newbie in Linux! In a very short period of time I've learned so many useful things! But now i'm facing a little problem. I've set up a tor and it's working perfectly and I've installed a proxychains and I have no idea if it's working! In config file is a list in witch we can add proxy servers. In mine list, there is only tor server with 127.0.0.1:9050 ip address and port number. Is that enough for me to be anonymous!?
