View Full Version : [ubuntu] Empathy Instant Messenger: can I block user???
August 2nd, 2010, 06:24 PM
I started using Empathy Instant Messenger to IM with my buddies in Europe.
Problem is that I get *tons* of spam.
Back when I was using Yahoo Messenger (on Window$$$), there was a function I used to block users.
I cannot find how a way to do it in Empathy.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to block a user???
Thanks for your help.

Pidgen is a much better IM client for Linux, and it supportd muli server apps too (ie, aim, irq, ect)

I have the same issue. If someone wants to add me, I get to accept or refuse. But if someone, or a spam bot, wants to send me a message, I don't have the option to refuse or block them.
I can't find an option to do so, either.
Pidgin is decent. I understand that webcam, and possibly voice, are better in Empathy, but don't use those. The problem that I have with Pidgin is that eventually it decides for some reason that it needs to consume all my CPU. I have to kill it and restart. After a time that gets annoying, and I switch back to Empathy.
Neither one is really a satisfactory IM client at this time.

I'm trying to figure this out too.
How do you block Yahoo IM spam? Both friend-requests and actual IMs?
How can Empathy have absolutely no spam-blocking features? That's just idiotic.

empathy menu (where file would be)
type in the contact you want to block
then hit add
