Internet Explorer requires the use of Adobe Flash player for some programs to run, does Ubuntu require the same software, or are there any differences in the software requirements?

Yes. Besides Shockwave Flash, you probably also need Java installed and configured for your browser.

you need to install adobe flash player from the software center for flash application to run in your browser

If you install "ubuntu-restricted-extras" from Synaptic, it will install the flash player and Java, as well as additional codecs (like mp3, etc.) all in one package.
