Installing ubuntu on older computer.

I want to install ubunto on my kids computer will they have a difficult time to use this system.

Depends what they will use it for. I think they won't have any trouble since Ubuntu is so user-friendly. If they just play games it will be easy... If they have a basic knowledge of computers (for example how to go to a webpage) then they should be fine. Good luck!

As long as you set up all the drivers up for them and sort out any bugs, it should be pretty kid friendly.

Also, make sure that the accounts for the kids don't have sudo permissions. You wouldn't want them messing around with the funny rectangles in GParted or anything like that.

Welcome to the forums. If they are experienced Windows users, it might take them a while to adapt to Ubuntu. If they've never used a computer before, then personally I think Ubuntu is a better way to learn than Windows. :)

I'm assuming you are an experienced Ubuntu user and will be able to help them get set up and troubleshoot when they have problems? Will they be using the computer for schoolwork, and if so, will Ubuntu be able to meet all their needs?

You could always try xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/) or lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net/) if standard ubuntu is a bit slow on the old computer.

Thanks.. yes its mainly for games but they have to use it for class work as well.

Your question is so general that it's likely not to get you many really useful answers. Remember, we have no idea what the resources of that "older computer" and no idea of the age or computer skill set of your children.

Ubuntu can run well on some older systems.

Intelligent, computer-using children can adapt to a different OS very well.

My suggestion is that you download a live CD version and try it, both on the computer and the kids.

Could you post your system specs? Also, if your kids are old enough to know not to mess around with things, then they should be fine with a standard account. Since they are kids, now is the time to teach them the ways of Ubuntu.
