I have an old computer currently running release 7.10, Gutsy. Can I upgrade to 10.04 without burning a CD?

If I must burn a CD, is there a version that will fit on a 700MB CD? Those are the only ones I have here.

A friend built it years ago, then we upgraded it. It is no model.

does your firmware support booting from a usb? do you have a spare usb flash drive? if so, take a look at this:

No. This is an old computer. It has no USB sockets. It was old when I installed 7.10. It runs fine though and i thought I would see what it did with 10.04.

The installer is made to fit on a cd (a cd can actually hold a bit more than 700MB), so you should be fine burning the image you've got on your hard drive.

The official way without a cd would be to upgrade to 8.04 first (which is a long term support version) and from there to 10.04.

I went to update manage and it offered to upgrade to 8.04, which I am now doing. I guess after that I can do update manager again and it will take me to 10.04. I made a CD of 10.04 just in case.

I am surprised at how slow the download is to do the upgrade. I did a speed test and my download speed 2-3 MBS, but at times the download to upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 was running as slow as 44KBS.
