I'm an occasional Ubuntu user. I've dual booted with Windows XP for years and I knew how to edit the old grub menu.

But I've just installed 10.04 and now I'm lost. I can still choose either Ubuntu or XP from the boot menu but I want it to default to XP and I don't know how to set the default any more.

The grub.cfg file says "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE" in big scary capitals. So what do I do?

Never mind. I found this - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 and restored the Windows mbr.

Sorry, but it's goodbye Ubuntu.

It's too bad you didn't show a LITTLE more patience ... because in less than 5 minutes time, you could have installed Startup-Manager in Ubuntu, launched it, and used the pull-down in the app to select your Windows OS as the default.

That would have made the changes for you and when you next booted, Windows would have been the default selection -- and you would not have had to manually edit anything!
