Overheating devices have plagued Apple for a few years now. But two stories today have highlighted the issue: a lawsuit in federal court concerning overheating iPads, and the Japanese government's demand for an official iPod Nano overheating explanation.

The iPad complaint was filed last Friday in California and seeks class-action status and unspecified damages, claiming that the device "overheats so quickly under common weather conditions."

The Japan order, issued by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, mandates that Apple explain the cause of various overheating incidents that have occurred there over the last several years. According to ministry official Seiji Shimagami:

"We've been asking they outline the preventive actions that have been taken for two years, but we question whether enough has been done so we took official action."The report is due by August 4th. If Apple fails to respond, they could face a fine.

Up until this point, the knowledge that an Apple product would probably get toasty at some point has just been part and parcel of ownership. But regardless of if anything comes from the lawsuit or the explanation, at least it's finally Apple that's feeling some heat.http://gizmodo.com/5599510/apples-overheating-problem-boils-over

I'm glad they're getting into trouble, because a few years ago they nearly burned down our house when the powerpack caught fire.
