Hello,

I am very new to the entire Linux OS, and only really have a basic knowledge of computers. However, recently, I have been interested in dual-booting Ubuntu on my desktop PC alongside Windows XP. My biggest question to start is, should I downsize my NTFS partition with GParted prior to installing Ubuntu? Or should I just resize using the Ubuntu installation process?

Thanks, in advance!

Welcome to Linux :)

This link should help you: http://uri.tl/b

The basic things to remember are: have a full backup, and defragment & check your Windows partition for errors first.

Personally I would probably use GParted, but either should work ok.

Both options will do the same thing - resize the partition. I would use GParted to create/resize partitions first, then install without need to create/delete/resize partitions during install process(with GParted it's easier and faster).
