In my experience all free hosts that I have tried have just plain sucked (after all, you often get what you pay for). I would recommend buying hosting from a web hotel that you know is good - it doesn't have to be expensive.

I'm using http://www.binero.se/ and Levonline (http://www.levonline.com/). Both of those have their datacenters in Sweden though, so they may not be a good choice for you, depending on where you live.

I might buy hosting in future, but want to start with something for free. I am in USA, but thanks for links.

Ahhh... /me remembers the days of trying to find a free webhost so he could setup phpbb 1.0. I don't think I ever found any that offered PHP/MySQL.

How about 127.0.0.1?

I use just host, they are cheap as chips, (next best thing to free hosting).

Admittedly I bought a faster speed but still, for the amount of traffic on spiralinear.org I probably shouldn't have wasted my money.

"Unlimited" pretty much everything? I don't think so.

One bit of advice of getting paid hosting; Don't get hosting from companies that oversell.

This reminds me of HostGator, who oversells like crazy and suspends your account when you start using too much disk space or bandwidth.

You are asking too much of a free host. To get what you desire (truly delivered, not simply promised), you will have to pay around 10 USD per month.

I had experience with them before, that unlimited is one big BS.

You can't not store any music or video files on there, only web-files.

just a quick warning. 000webhost is horrible it gives free hosts a bad name.

I suggest host1free 365-hosting or free hostia.

Or if you don't mind p2h webhosts trap17 is the best.

Is the best free host I've found to date. No adds, php+mysql (and more,) and all free. Their main drawback is that they have more downtime then most other hosts, but I would still recommmend them.

how about self hosting, to start?

viable if your site isn't going to be multimedia intensive, and if traffic isn't so large that your ISP notices.

you can use dyndns's free services to maintain a traditional www.whatever.com presence even with a dynamic IP.

"What happens when traffic to my website is such that my ISP notices? What happens when I decide I want a lot of multimedia?"

Cross that bridge when you come to it. :P
