Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Pentium III (Coppermine) Memory 182 MiB

Everything seems to run extremely slowly. Am I a bit short of resources for this installation?

I am a complete tyro with regard to Ubuntu.

The recommended minimum system specs (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements) for Ubuntu 10.04 are as follows:

Ubuntu Desktop Edition

* 1 GHz x86 processor
* 1 Gb of system memory (RAM)
* 15 GB of hard-drive space (although this can be split onto 2 drives, a 5Gb / and a 10Gb /home fairly easily)
* Graphics card and monitor capable of 1024 by 768
* Either a Cd/Dvd-drive or a Usb socket (or both)
* Internet access is helpful

The best way to speed up Ubuntu would be to upgrade your processor and RAM.

Yes, that is a fair way under the recommended minimum requirements-

You could try lubuntu, or a minimal install + Xfce (or gnome, but Xfce would work better).

Or get more RAM (BTW, 182MB? Did you mean 128MB). You will be limited to 512MB with intel P3 chipsets, so its going to be under the recommended minimum. Might be better off moving to a different distro in many ways.

Sorry but that computer is too old and slow for the current Ubuntu.

You can try Lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net/). It's a light weight ubuntu version that should be suitable for this machine. It's not as complete as stock Ubuntu.

If Lubuntu is still slow you can try lighter linux distros like Dam Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/). This one will run like crazy on your computer(*), but it's somewhat hard to use (i.e. you must mount USB devices by hand) and lacks some features (i.e.: Flash).

(*) I have used it in 64 Mb computers and it was very zippy.

Thanks everybody - it's just an old machine that was doing nothing so I thought I'd have a play with Ubuntu. I'm not really into spending money on it.

Ubuntu does run but, as I said, slowly. However it lets me see what Ubuntu is like and get a bit familiar with its operation.

Try Puppy: http://puppylinux.org/main/index.php?file=Overview%20and%20Getting%20Started. htm
