Just tried a 8.04-10.04 upgrade. I got was a cheery message about how upgrading Open Office couldn't happen: "Error during commit 'E:Couldn't configure pre-depend jre for openoffice.org-writer2latex, probably a dependency cycle.' Restoring original system state." My previous system state was highly unsatisfactory: I was in VGA mode after installing a 'supported' ATI Radeon HD 5450, only to find it wasn't).

Is there a way to make this upgrade? How about if I uninstall Open Office and reinstall it afterwards? If I did that, and the update still didn't work, I'd probably run screaming from the building.

Never mind. I uninstalled openoffice. Seems like exponential overkill. I notice this problem has been submitted as an official Ubuntu bug. Wish there was a simpler workaround. The half-full-glass interpretation I guess is that I'll end up with the latest openoffice version.
