You know, if money, time and space were not an issue; what would you build/buy?

Mine would look something like this:

Motherboard - ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
Processor - AMD Phenom™ II X6 Black 3.2 GHz
Memory - G.SKILL Trident+ Turbulence II 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 2000
Storage - Micron 256 GB RealSSD C300 (for File System) + Seagate 2 TB
Barracuda XT Internal HDD (for everything else)
Sound card - M-Audio Delta 1010
GPU - ATI Radeon™ HD 4870 X2
Displays - 2 x Acer T230H 23" touch screens + one Vizio 37" E371VA monitor
Mouse & Keyboard - wireless (specifics don't really matter to me here)

It would cost me a King's ransom; but it would be so worth it for the marvelous fuzzy warbles I could create. :D

How about you?

P.S. If there are any (moot) compatibility issues I've over-looked, feel free to point them out. Gotta learn somehow.

It's fun going to newegg and pretending to be buying parts for a new computer. Kind of like window shopping.

Well, for my gaming rig:

Mobo - ASUS M4A89TD PRO/USB3 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131655)
CPU - AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849)
RAM - 2 x G.SKILL PIS Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231336) (this is 8GB out of the mobo's max 16. I sacrificed high capacity for lower latency. Maybe I can get both somewhere else, but this is what I found on newegg)
HDD - 4 x WD Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533) in RAID 10 + WD VelociRaptor WD4500HLH (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136557) for /boot, swap, and less important storage.
GPU - 2 x SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100281-2GVXSR Radeon HD 5870 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102893)
Display - NEC Display Solutions LCD2490WUXi2-BK (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824002527) + 2 x NEC Display Solutions LCD2190UXp-BK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1538520) (big one in the middle, obviously. Overall resolution of 5100x1200. I could probably get this setup cheaper somewhere else though)

This doesn't include the case, PSU, or accessories, but I'm not really picky about those. Not including that, shipping, or taxes, I'm at about $5,000 already.

If I had the money, I would also build a bunch of folding rigs that focus on raw processing power per watt. I could load them up with high-GFLOPS GPUs and put Windows on them to use the F@H GPU client.

Well, mine would be based around some dual CPU socket board, pref with two AMD X6 BE's on it and tonnes of memory. :D

If money wasn't an issue, I would choose something like the HP ProLiant BL490 Blade Server with dual quad core processors, 64 GB RAM, in a c7000 chassis that holds 16 blade servers. See pic http://slscomp.web.psi.ch/_ez.Racks/_ez.HP-Blade/c7000w16.jpg.

With one Blade Server, Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, a RAID, and some thin clients; I could replace all the computers in my house. Just think of the fun I could have if I put in all 16 Blade Servers.

:lolflag:

Sadly, it will never happen.

If I never gamed at all on my machine (Smash Bros. Brawl, occasionally Steam and Grand Theft Auto 3-SA), a netbook with a high resolution output for occasionally using a larger screen would be my dream computer. I don't really need much more with Linux. That is, until I finish a 3d film I'd like to render- then having the computer I have now (it's a monster, honestly) would be desirable.

But yeah, it would seem that with Linux, even with a lower end processor and hardly any RAM, you feel like you have a supercomputer anyway.

And if you use one of the *box WMs, it gets even crazier.

Phenom IIs wont run in a dual CPU setup. You would need to move up to opterons. BTW, X6? Bah! Opterons are at 12 (yes, that is twelve) cores now. You could have 24cores on a daul board :)

I don't need ridiculous amounts of CPU power, I powerful AMD quad core, would be more than enough for my needs.

A dream rig for me would be if my 24" iMac ran such a quad core CPU, which was upgradeable, & also allowed for long term upgrading of the GPU.

Done finished!

Motherboard - NO ONBOARD VIDEO

Processor - 1090T Black Edition Phenom II X6 (3.2 GHz, 140W, AM3)

Graphics - nVidia GTX 480 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gtx_480_us.html) (ATI and Intel suck)

Case - Simple, no need for lights, anything. (less than 17 inches in height)

Power Supply - 800Watts

RAM/Memory - 8 GB

Harddrive - (less/equal to) 250 GB (Seriously? Why Go Any Higher?)

Mouse / Keyboard - USB/Wired (Hate Wireless)

Monitor - Some LED HDMI Monitor with 1080p

Fans - More Than Two (Yes, I hate liquid cooling)

Extras - NO MEDIA CARD READERS (For Heaven's Sake, my printer does this already, and ubuntu even recognizes the printer as a removable storage, so why do I need them?)

Optical Drive - LiteOn Blu-Ray Reader / DVD-RW / CD-RW (LG Sucks)

Cost: Over 2200 USD at Best Buy (Tax included); Around 1500 USD At newegg

if I get this, I'll be probably set until I die.

if both my desktop and netbook computers melted and i had the money, my setup would be quite simple:

- dd-wrt or openwrt router
- netbook
- keyboard/mouse/external monitor for netbook
- acer revo
- external 2TB estata drive
- biggest HDTV i could find

i built my desktop years ago and it is still serving me well, but my requirements now are just: movies, music, coding, surfing.

If I could get anything? Hmmm...

That wouldn't exactly be a computer. It would utilise a computer but it would be so much more. What I want is a computer implant hooked up directly to the nervous system. Imagine playing games on something like that. And of course it would run Linux, I don't want MS or Apple messing with my mind. As for the accessories, maybe a pocket-sized teleporter or if those aren't in stock I would settle for a flying car.

The thing is, when will I be able to get something like that? Late 2030s? That would be a bit long to wait.

And it will likely not recognize any of your hardware, and you'll be bound to a very limited filesystem for your infinite storage drive.

Also, i was trying to conceptualize how a dark matter HDD would work, seeing as it does not interact with "normal" matter in anyway (except gravitationally)

CPU: 512bit, 128 core, each core under-clocking at 100 YHz, taking up the same amount of space as a matchbox, cooled to absolute zero with liquid helium.
GPU: a rack of 6 or 7 of these (http://news.softpedia.com/news/ASUS-Rams-Market-With-4GB-Dual-GPU-ARES-Graphics-Card-146754.shtml) cooled by liquid nitrogen. 'nuff said.
RAM:12 EB MRAM sharing the cpu's liquid helium system.
HDD: 128 YB SSD.
PSU: draws zero point energy from processor
Internet connection: 2 inch thick fiber optic cable rated at 250 EB/s.
Display: 10.52 x 9^24 (that is, 797 sextillion, 664 quintillion, 430 quadrillion, 768 trillion, 725 billion, 98 million, 633 thousand and 610) by 10.52 x 9^24 pixel holographic display. Neural interface port optional.
