I do not know why they changed the titles. But, I am glad to see them set to boring titles that may only reflect visitation to the forums. With the titles reflecting linux knowledge, some people were viewed as having lots of knowledge because of their title when they knew little.

On another ditro's forum which has many knowledgeable people, there were a few with guru titles because the title was granted on forum visits. A few times they gave out some information that was wrong and potentially dangerous due to ignorance. Their replies were taken as 'good advice' probably because of their titles.

Though it would be nice to have a title that gives the idea I know something even though I don't.

I'm quite sad to see the 'Ubuntu inspiring guru' gone from my title as well. I was really aiming to particapte as much as possible to get to 'Ubuntu Guru' title :-(

......

But surely 'Expert Member' potentially has the same problem (assuming the titles are linked only to post count)?

As for "junior member"... it's enough to give you an inferiority complex... Why not just "new member" or "recently joined"?

I think one of the things I like about this forum is that there isn't much of the linux elitism you sometimes see elsewhere. (All that RTFM attitude...)

Anyway, with that in mind it seems odd to encourage traditional "elitist" hierarchies like "junior" and "expert" - which may or may not represent the poster fairly anyway.

cheers

Perfect this is the thread i wanted to see.. So lets get ideas for new "user titles"

Keep them clean and to the point of linux/ubuntu. I am very open to changing them. The reason behind the change was to get the forum community involved in selecting new ones.

Ok, I just have to post this because it's funny.

We could have poster ratings based on coffees... with coffee beans instead of stars... So that new people could be "Ubuntu Coffee Member" ... and up to "Ubuntu Espresso Member" ... and then people like jdong could be "Ubuntu Quad Mocha Member"

Because I swear he must have a caffeine drip in order to do as much as he does!

Oooh oooh! And then moderators could be "Ubuntu Master Roasters"

ok I'll stop. *giggle* *snicker*

Maybe ....

5 Cups a day
Way too much coffee
Has a caffine drip
Coffee = 100% Blood = 0%
Walking Coffee Mug

ps. maybe we need a coffee icon?

Doesn't a coffee theme fit the requirements...?

Let's see...
Ubuntu Brown... Coffee....
Linux... Coffee/Caffeine ....

;)

Or maybe I just have coffee on the brain... speaking of which... I'm getting myself a latte. \\:D/

I don't like coffee. Actively despise the stuff in fact. Give me a nice cup of tea any day.

The new titles seem to work though. A little quirky, inoffensive to all, no connotations of being more or less knowledgeable, and it clears up the whole "inspiring guru" thing which had vexed me so!

So, even though the mere mention of coffee makes me tremble with loathing and disgust, the new titles work for me too :-)

February 15th, 2005, 04:02 AM
Cool, no more boring regular titles :D

i like the coffee idea. It'd be cool if the stars can be replaced with say coffeebeans or cups with steam emerging... something like that :)

btw, I see some people have a Supporter under their names (see #12 & #14 posts in this thread) - is this related to post count too, or something else?

And Marquis_de_Carabas I am considering making user configurable titles at some point :)

u-g, wouldn't it be more helpful if the users were able to vote/rate each other, similar to the way ebay works?

I'm not 100% convinced with Ubuntu = 100% Blood = 0%. At least apply some formatting to seperate two assertions.

e.g. Ubuntu = 100%, Blood = 0%

*note to self, do not read posts five minutes before going to bed...

u-g, I think you need a title too... as in "The Ubuntu Bean" .... I was actually dreaming about coffee/ubuntu all night long.

Also, I reworked some of jimmac's coffee cup icons as ideas for replacement stars...

http://www.linuxpeach.com/coffee_cup.png (coffee cup, no steam)

http://www.linuxpeach.com/coffee_cup_steam.png (coffee cup, with very light steam... I could darken it too...)

Right now they're around 48x48, but I can make them much smaller... :)

I darkened the steam from the first post, but let me darken it another shade:

If you change the forum skin then could it change the icons for coffee cups to something else ? I just had the idea from the "Have you got the distro fever?" post when I accidentily read it as "disco fever" !! lol !! Maybe we could have a skin with disco ball gifs that spin instead of coffee mugs and ratings like ...
