View Full Version : help me triple check these components?

Asked yesterday about where to go for linux compatible hardware seeing as I'm building my next computer entirely from scratch. I looked around newegg.com and picked out the components I was going to buy, total cost: Around 450$
I've checked these components and I'm pretty sure they're all compatible with each other. I'm also fairly sure that all are linux compatible; but I'm a software not a hardware person. I apologize if I left something important out, this is the first time I've ever built a computer completely from scratch; I have only ever rebuilt computers before.

Get different CPU, unlock it, your motherboard has ACC :)

Even if it does not unlock, it will still be faster than athlon.

Otherwise, looks good :)

I read you already have all these things??
-Keyboard, mouse, monitor, sound system, webcam, optical-drive?

Looks good. One thing you could change is the graphics card. I would get something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102870
But that's just me. Some people are paranoid about ATI drivers but I have had no problems.

The case and mobo are both ATX so you should be ok , cases often have a number of standoffs to mount different boards . The power supply is unknown to me , do some checking around until your satisfied it's a decent one . The PSU is the heart of your system.

The core unlock feature isn't guaranteed to work. My Athlon II x3's 4th core was dead. It would be better just to pay for the 4 cores.

I know core unlock is not guaranteed, but they are still faster than Athlon.
It was only a suggestion. :)

I would stay away from ATI...

The onboard audio on the mobo should work fine. The onboard video is kinda iffy, but if you've got a dedicated card, you should be fine.

A Phenom II X2 555 isn't faster than an Athlon II X4. If you unlocked the 555 then it would definitely be faster. I would rather have 4 medium-fast cores than 2 fast cores.

I would only prefer the 4mediums over the two fast cores if I were to be heavily multitasking

That is true. If you will not be multitasking, the Phenom II X2 555 is great and it has the added ability to unlock.

I'm one of those people who's paranoid, plus nvidia's excellent linux support has made me a customer for life (unless ATI/nVidia's roles were reversed). That and I like svga support :) As for the processor, I'll consider it and look around to see if I can get a better deal; I suppose I won't be multitasking that much. Also to clarify, I do have a keyboard mouse and webcam.

Probably to late, but why get a 790GX when you are getting a video card?

If you like biostar, then go for this-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138198

SATAIII, USB 3.0 and the newer north and south brigdes. Or, if you dont want to spend an extra $10, then this-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138179

Then put the saved $25 toward a better video card (GT220 or 240) or a better CPU.

Also, most older sound cards are not as good as the current onboard sound.
