Last May I attempted to upgrade an older [i386] laptop from 8.04 to 10.04 by typing Alt-F2, then "update manager". Some hours later when I tried to reboot, I found my computer unable to boot. I *finally* found a copy of my 8.04 DVD and have everything ready to try again.

Is there a safer way of doing this upgrade? I think I downloaded the 64-bit version of Ubuntu last time. I don't want to make that mistake again.

Suggestions please!

In theory, upgrading from one LTS version to another shouldn't be a problem. It seems that you have had issues though.

I recommend you backup all your important files and then go for a fresh install of 10.04

By the way, I also suggest you remove the email address in your signature. This is a friendly forum, but you never know who else might be hanging out here.

Good luck and if you need help or advice with installing 10.04, feel free to ask.

:)

Thanks,, but *which* iso do I d/l?? I have grabbed several versions of BSD and a couple of ubuntu [[or kubuntu since I use mostly KDE]]. Nothing works entirely. Where can I torrent plain ol' 10.04 UBUNTU?
(I have no CD-R's left so it has to be a DVD.)

...Just plain lucky that I had the old 8.04 in one of my junk drawers!

I am not clear as to which version you want; KDE or Gnome?

Here is the link for torrent downloads of Ubuntu with Gnome
plain ol' 10.04

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/alternative-download#bt

For Kubuntu (with KDE):

http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/download

Hope this helps.

you can burn any of the cd iso's to a dvd, for me I burn them on a rewritable and just keep reusing it.

Both! I use KDE more than things-Gnome---this was the only reason I d'loaded kubuntu [and the 10.04 DVD failed to install correctly]. So I will try for the 10.04 DVD of ubuntu.

I did find a URL that told how-to upgrade via the network from 8.04 to 10.04. There were instructions that mentioned editing a file, "menu.1st"
so that upon reboot the upgraded system would not look for 8.04. This is what I would like to try first, but I'm not certain that I understand exactly what to edit.

The link to the upgrade pages is:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades

in case you can figure out what (and how) i need to edit. One reason I am reluctant to download a DVD here, on this desktop, is that I am virtually out of disk. There is plenty of room on the ThinkPad.
