I was in IRC talking with some developer friends tonight, and one of them is apparently a developer working within his company on XGL and Compiz. I think the company is pretty well-known, but I can't remember which one, and I don't want to get him in trouble, so I won't guess.

Anyway, he posted some screenshots of the new features that are going into this 3D desktop stuff, and I was completely blown out of the water. Some of them will require "integration work" into GNOME but when that's done I completely believe Linux will have the most impressive 3D desktop environment on the market.

I put the screenshots on my server so this guy doesn't get in trouble; here is what I've seen so far, and I hope my explanations do it justice.

1. Support for a *huge* number of virtual, "tiled" workspaces, with an intuitive, 3D-sphere interface for moving between them.

2. A new "3D multiuser" feature that is supposed to make working on one monitor the same experience as if you had two monitors! See for yourself:

3. Alt-tab interface with a slick approach to task organization and division of applications into groups, with a "cue" selector (must see to believe):

4. The shutdown screen of the future! The layout of the menu isn't completely decided upon yet, but the idea is to make computer management enjoyable. Like a game, if you will.

Well, that's all he had to show me, but I think you'll agree that XGL + Compiz are "teh way of teh future."

Peace out, and get excited

No offense, but when I look at that and then at games made with DirectX, the latter wins hands down.

Judge books by their covers much?

/still plays Final Fantasy, even though the graphics "suck".
