Who is "the rest of us"? And did you just get sick of this forum, or what?

No, not sick of this forum. I'm not knocking it either. I've learned allot here and I'll still be around.

"The rest of us" means anyone that has gotten sick of any forum that has grown an air of superiority and arrogance. Or has gotten replies in their threads like this:

sudo gobbledegook-get make blah-blah

with no explanation.

One of the main ideas of the forum is to take the idea of "Linux for Human Beings." and making it actually for Human Beings.

If someone posts a vicious command, for example, it's highly unlikely that they'll get a warning or be asked to edit their post. Post simply disappears and they may as well, depending on the context of the post.

I tried to keep the tone of the C.C. as light hearted as possible.

Hm. Well, I think I'll try to hold up the fort here and encourage openness, friendliness to average users along with explanations, and promote a feeling of comradery between users from different DEs, technical backgrounds, etc.

Not that I don't like the approach you have, but since you're so ambiguous about the reasoning behind the 'the rest of us' thing it seems to inhibit the meaning for an alternative forum in the first place.

However, the design isn't bad, you have a place for Debian users, and it seems like you already have a good group of people there. I hope it catches on and becomes a popular alternative, since I might feel like escaping there someday.

That's not a truly open forum as you are still at the top. If you want a truly open forum, use the methods used on BCF :

http://www.bikechatforums.com/

There is no moderator involvement except moving threads. The members there can rate each other. If someone's a Muppet people drop their ratings and they lose the ability to post without previewing and their posts are hidden. Nobody actually gets banned, but the system works well. Even if it does mean you need to be thick skinned some time.

Some feedback on your website, the front page looks horrible, find a nicer theme. You also have faaaar to many sub forums for a new forum. Everything will be to distanced. Bunch stuff up a bit or the forum will continue to look sparse.

Looks nice, but I'm already having a hard time following all the posts across Ubuntuforums.org, ubuntugeek.com and linuxquestions.org ;-D

If there was only a site to consolidate all of these together, now that's something I'd love to see!

If anything I think an Ubuntu StackExchange (http://www.stackexchangesites.com/about/) site would be fantastic, I'm a big fan of some SE sites, the Q&A design works great. Edit: There's a http://linuxexchange.org Q&A site

Thanks for the feedback guys, we appreciate it allot! Obviously, as a matter of taste, the site isn't going to be for everyone and that's cool.

Moving threads, and site maintenance are pretty much what the Admins. do. Along with helping folks out of course. We're hoping that users that get truly out of line will be dealt with by the other users long before I or one of my counterparts must get involved. Preferably there will never be anything to get involved in!

Please keep the opinions coming. Whether you like it or not we want to know. Post ideas and thoughts here or, even better:biggrin:, register and post them over there.

When you are registered, you have the option of using a different layout theme and things won't be so ...sprawling.

Again thanks for the feedback!

The thing is your still going to have a crud load of 0 post forums. It will make half your forum look like a ghost town. Remove the sub categories and just have the main ones to prevent this. If you get busy, add them in again later on.

actually we are checking out some other providers, with a little bit more of space and lots more bandwidth... probably switching somewhere this week.

also, moderation isn't that much of moderation... nothing can really be truly open, much like in a democracy you are not free to do anything you want...
we are all subject to what is socially accepted, where some cultures are more progressive than others. the only things we don't accept is insulting people (this includes being an arrogant pr...) and intentionally passing harmful commands.

I agree a stack exchange site would be great. Currently there is one that is close to becoming a reality. If you are interested click 'Commit!' and lets see this thing into Beta.

warfacegod

this ?

Here:

Caps Lock key skinning - Technique 57:

Step .01

Take your wireless keyboard, become totally pissed off at it because for some dumbshit reason you must hold it at eye level or higher while pointing it straight up or down or backwards but never actually at the signal receiver regardless of how close you are to it or if you're even standing up, and launch it onto your living room floor. Batteries and keys will go flying everywhere. Do not be alarmed by this. It is to be expected and is very satisfying.

Step .02

Go buy another keyboard because you'll need a way to enter your password if you didn't have enough sense to set your computer to auto-login before trying Step .01

I discovered this technique last night. I still haven't found all the keys. I think my Black Lab is hiding them from me in her stomach.

??? Someone thought ubuntu = hacking?

Most probably, some sort of downloads... but its also likely that the retarded Websense software mistook the content on your website as hacking related.

UF and OpenUbuntu.com are a heckuvalot nicer to newbies and kids than some of the "geekier" ones that can be just plain elitist. I ran into that on the Debian forums when I offered a post to another newbie on a graphical way (which is what he asked for) to install a downloaded .deb file. Abuncha snide little quips about "dumbing down Debian" followed.

That's just one example on DF, but there was alot of that sorta stuff there. They don't like newbies and they definitely don't like kids! It's too bad, too, because they're chasing away the very people who they will need to carry the project into the future - and they end up on Mepis, Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc. Just wait 'til Canonical takes over the whole Debian project or something, lol! Then they still pro'lly won't even see how they made it happen by chasing away a whole generation of users.

As for the OpenUbuntu forums, they've been fun so far and nice to me. I get a little teasing there but so does everyone else! They are equal opportunity harassers, unlike the snobby elitists on DF who only harass newbies and kids.

Enjoying it alot,
Robin
