Just curious what other people think, because I realized that part of the reason why I run Linux is due to the novelty. I want a certain diversity in the OS market, no single operating system controlling more than 20% of the market, and the end of the dangerous OS monoculture we have. I figure 5-10% mark is when the major manufactures start caring significantly about an OS, so that's where I'd hope to see various open source OSes. I expect/hope easier linuxes like ubuntu and fedora to gain ground on desktops enough to become semi-mainstream (where OSX is now give or take), and there'll still be more advanced ones like slackware for hardcore geeks like me. Hoping haiku and GNU Hurd will both be in beta or release stages. There was a thread like this a while back so I hope this isn't moved to recurring, but that one focused on hardware, and in this one I mostly mean the software computer world.
