I went to the Dell site and couldn't find the netbook with ubuntu installed. I called Dell and got a guy speaking English as a second language, got put on hold, talked to someone else who was confused, and gave up.

Does anyone here have a Dell Netbook with ubuntu? What distro is it? Does it work OK. Any problems? Is there any better netbook with ubuntu intalled?

Are you in Canada? Same problem here for me.

Apparently it doesn't exist for Canadians.

If you dig around on the Canadian site, you can find a scattered outdated computer shipping with a choice of Windows or Ubuntu.

USA has the upper hand on this one it seems. Canadian site has nothing like that.

This is from the Canadian site. All of these offer Ubuntu as a choice for the OS.

Yup, and none of the computer ship 8.04; it's an outdated placeholder.

I clicked "customize" for the Latitude. The only OS listed are Windows ones.

I bought a Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu 8.04 preinstalled, about 1 year ago. It was a special "Dell branded Ubuntu remix" that was really outdated and not very compatible with "regular" Ubuntu.

I would suggest simply buying a netbook you like with Windows preinstalled, then install Ubuntu 10.04 yourself.

Make sure you check the hardware compatibility list to see if the specific model you're looking at is well supported: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks

System 76 sells netbooks with "regular" Ubuntu installed; I would choose this over the "Dellbuntu" netbooks if I was looking for out-of-the-box Ubuntu joy.

I can't stand Dell, and I am typing on one now. Dell is the reason I now ONLY use Linux. When this computer dies, it will not be replaced by a Dell. They are a horrible company that does not care for their customers and I speak from experience. Check with System 76. They have always been very happy to provide info about their machines.

I have a dell mini 10 running Ubuntu Remix 9.10. Runs great. Haven't got around to upgrading. I just installed it from USB, since they didn't sell it locally with Ubuntu preinstalled. Though if I had to do again, I'd order the Ubuntu version online to prevent MS from collecting the OEM license fee ... I get annoyed at all the times I've purchased Windows just to throw it in the trash. :)

Two people have mentioned system 76. Their netbook costs a little more than Dell, but I don't mind paying an extra $90 for better service and a better machine.

Anyone have any problems with system 76?

I will say that the Dell's get hot. It's like a little toaster on the bottom. :)
