install desktop video dies - where in the process am I

Good afternoon.

I installed 10.04 Server
Then I did an apt-get install Ubuntu-desktop

The display is black
The monitor is receiving no signal (amber led)
I believe that the install has stopped, but what am I supposed to do.?

After hours of no display and no disk activity I powered down. Now the the computer will not boot. I have text, but no joy.

Any help would be appreciated.
