Dual Monitor Issue

My dual monitors worked fine with 9.10 (and older releases)

If I boot just the laptop, the lcd is perfect.
If I then connect the ext monitor - no signal detected although the Display settings detect the monitor.
If I boot with ext monitor connected, it is perfect but laptop lcd is very dim, it is there but unreadable.

10.4, all latest updates. Toshiba R200. (Intel graphics, 954 if I'm not mistaken)

Can anyone help please?

Update: if I run the laptop alone, then put it to sleep, connect the monitor, then resume, both screens are fine. Puzzling and not very workable..
